Born on August 20, 1943, in Ludhiana, Punjab, Balbir Singh Rajewal is a politician and a leader of the farm union. He has founded the Bharatiya Kisan Union and also happens to be a chief candidate of the Sanyukt Samaj Morcha party for the upcoming 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly election. He is mainly known for his contribution to the 2020 farmers’ protest. Balbir began his career in the telegraph department as a telegraphist. However, in 1968, he changed his profession by resigning from his job.
Who is Balbir Singh Rajewal?
Later, in May 1972, Balbir gathered 11 peasants group in Chandigarh and formed a union called “Punjab Khetibari Union” (PKU). The 78-year-old was appointed as Secretary of the Bharatiya Kisan Union, the transformed name of PKU. Not just this, but the activist was also given credits for writing BKU’s constitution. Rajewal had worked with people including Sharad Anantrao Joshi and Mahendra Singh Tikait, an Indian farmer leader from UP.
The leader went on a hunger strike in 2009 where he demanded relief for the farmers who suffered loss from the draught. His protest did not go in vain as the government granted around 800 crore rupees under draught funds. Balbir Singh played a major role in the 2020 farmers’ protest in India. In 2020, Balbir started his protest against the Government when it passed three farm acts. Firstly, he protested with 31 other Farmer unions in Punjab but later moved to Singhu Border at Haryana.
After the Government withdrew those laws in Nov 2021, the 22 Punjab’s Farm unions also broke away from the said Morcha and went ahead to announce their intentions to participate in the Punjab Legislative Assembly election which will take place in 2022.
